We have ‘Heritage plates’ in Australia, which are current re-issues of the first sets of plates in each state, issued around 100 years ago.
Low numbers like this sell for huge money, and they’re usually on far more expensive cars.

Sounds like the Delaware Black Plate. I’ve seen two down here in TN(each probably worth low 5 figures). One was a 4th gen 4runner and the other a Raptor driven by a student...

Here in New Hampshire you can only get low-digit plates one of two ways: you either have to have had it since it was first issued, or you have to know someone in the DMV who can do that sort of thing. You see a lot of low-number plates on those connected to State Government.

Both my Prelude friends in Delaware have them on their cars. They are nowhere near the most expensive thing on them.

“The numbers 1, 2 and 3 are reserved for the governor, lieutenant governor and secretary of state. The No. 6 was bought in February 2008 by real estate developer and philanthropist Anthony N. Fusco, who paid $675,000 — still the record for highest paid. The same family paid $185,000 at a 1993 auction for No. 9. ”

This plate as far as I know sold for well over $100k, but almost all of that went to charity.

It seems like most of US license plate collectability is centred around New England... why is that?

They look particularly nice on black cars.

When I was in high school in Pennsylvania around 2000 I used to see an Audi A6 driving around with the standard style tag that just said “D” I always wondered how long the owner had been transferring it or if they just paid some crazy money for it.
